Mō Kā Uri is our collective 25 year iwi vision, planning for tomorrow,
today
“It is inevitable that our successors will find themselves in a comparable situation to that in which we found ourselves following the historic settlements of my generation.
In 2025, in 2050, in 2075 they will find themselves in a changed and different context… Just as we found ourselves searching for ways to transform our concept of ourselves as a tribal nation, different from that which we had inherited, so might they…
But we, in our time, have gifted them with a power of choice denied to our own ancestors.”
– Tā Tipene O’Regan (2014)

The intention of Mō Kā Uri is to leave behind what no longer serves us, and to do what's needed to ensure that future generations of Ngāi Tahu have more choices.
If we are to be true to our tribal whakatauki, we need a vision and strategy that will make as much sense to our mokopuna as it would to our tīpuna.

As we look towards what comes next, it is important that we acknowledge the past and all those who have contributed to get us to where we find ourselves today:
-
Those who fought for Te Kereme and the Ngāi Tahu settlement in 1998
-
Those whose vision established the organisation and shaped Ngāi Tahu 2025
-
Those who have grown iwi kaupapa over the last 25 years
What they have gifted us is the confidence and ability to choose a different future.

Ngāi Tahu Stories From the Future
Four alternative futures for 2050

Ngāi Tahu Stories from the Future has been created for and by our whānau. It is about challenging assumptions and stretching the imagination in terms of what is possible, and through this process create a shared vision that sees our iwi, hapū and whānau thriving.
Each of the four alternative futures tell a story of conceivable pathways that we could take, and help us to be more rigorous and creative in exploring emerging risks and opportunities between now and 2050.
